This year marked the 3rd year I participated in the Philadelphia Flower Show. So I "celebrated" by competing in 4 categories. It's borderline insane, but boy, the fun was very well worth it! ^_^
The theme this year is "Bella Italia", so as you may have guessed, it's everything Italian. The major exhibitions were mostly garden/landscape style with a few modern/contemporary displays (such as from Moda Botanica and Michael Bruce). Highly inspirational!
In the artistic competitions, they introduced a few new classes to form the 'Fashion Runway" - I LOVE, I LOVE, I LOVE this idea! ^_^
So this year, they had "Shoes", "Evening Bag", and "Ties" on top of the other Jewelry classes and the Dress Class that made it back.
It was certainly an honor to be able to compete with these extremely talented folks and like I've stated many times before, I learned a great deal of techniques and new ideas from them. The experience is always amazing! ^_^
This year I did not get any blue ribbon, but...I did get 3 ribbons out of the 4 categories I competed in. Not bad, huh? ^_^ I have no complaints here! ^_^ I got 2nd place for the Dress class, 3rd place for the Evening Bag class, and Honorable Mention for the Shoes class. And...Even though I did not get any ribbon for my Miniature category, I still think it's the prettiest work I did for this year competition and am proud of it. ^_^ For those who attended the show and are inspired to compete in any of the Artistic Arrangement Class, I highly encourage you to join! There is no admission fee to compete and trust me, you'll have tons of fun! If you need more information or looking for advise on where to start, please feel free to contact The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society or myself (papertini at gmail dot com). I would be more than happy to share you any information that I know! So I definitely look forward to seeing you there next year! ^_^
Without further ado...please enjoy the pictures of my works from this year's show! ^_^
Thank you for reading as always!

I finally had the time to write in this blog again! Holy cow! After a month plus! Hehehehe... ^_^
In the future, I will try not to combine Flower Show participation, house hunting and my day-job office moving all within the same 2 weeks span!
Now...let's go back to talking about the exciting Philadelphia Flower Show 2008!
This year is the year I pretty much went nuts by entering in 3 different competition classes: Jewelry, Costume and Medium Niche.
I got so addicted to being a part of the show after my awesome first experience last year! What brought me back is not so much the competition, but it's more on the learning experience. Everybody are always really nice and generous in sharing the knowledge. I really appreciate that. There's always new tricks, tips and new plant names to learn! All good stuff! ^_^ I am especially grateful for all the support, help and encouragement from the advisers of each of the competition classes I was in: Anne Coste, Maudelin Alston, Jackie Purvis, Amy Sutryn, Pam Danner, Jim Hayden and Susanna Baum. A special hug for my mentors: Jo Kane and Donna Edwards. Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you!!!
This year is also filled with blessings and nice surprises. I am very much humbled with all acknowledgments I received.
I received a blue ribbon (first place) in the Costume class and honorable mention in Jewelry ("Django") and Medium Niche ("Counterpoint").
I was and still am ecstatic!
The nice surprise came at the Exhibitors and Awards Banquet on March 8, 2008. I was so clueless when they called out my name to go up the stage for the Susan Groome Award and here's the description:
Sarah C. Z. Groome Award
— to the individual accumulating the greatest number of points in the following Artistic Classes: Costumes, Hanging Designs, Jewelry, Miniature Arrangements, Niches, Pedestals, Pressed Plant Material, and Tables. The winner must have a minimum of three Artistic entries and must have entered two or more Artistic categories.
The following day I was told that I am actually the runner up but will still get a trophy. So...I'll be really honest, I am still clueless, confused and seriously not convinced till this second that I actually have won an award. So let's just wait until they really give me the trophy then maybe it'll sink it for sure. Hehehe... Even if they decided not to give me the trophy in the end for whatever reason, I still felt thankful for being called up to that stage. Hehehehe... It really did make me feel special. Though I swore I really looked like a deer in the headlight when I walked up to that stage. Hehehe... ^_^
Anyhoo ballyhoo...do enjoy the pictures of my works at the flower show below and more will be posted in the photo album.
>> Costume Class 125-C: "Over the Top"

>> Jewelry Class 181: "Django"

>> Medium Niche 109-M: "Counterpoint"
